This week's presentation entailed reading comprehension and speed reading tips. If you are someone who finds it difficult to finish all of your readings or to just focus on the content of your reading assignments, these tips may be of use.
SQ3R
1) Survey - survey the chapter
- title, intro, summary, major section headings, key words
- to determine what important concepts you should focus on and to get a general idea of what the chapter will be about
- What is the main point?
- What evidence supports the main idea?
- What are the examples?
- How is this related to the rest of the chapter, the book, or to me?
- skim first
- read slowly and most importantly actively
- take notes, but minimize the need to stop
- summarize after every few sections
- search for answers to your questions
- don't skip words you do not know
- write down your own questions, opinions, and reactions --> will help with remembering and retaining the information
- read section again if the information was too complex
- could be to yourself (silently or aloud)
- could be to a friend or study partner
- recite to remember
- if you have trouble reciting what you read, then you may have to re-read section again
- if a novel idea comes to your head, or if you are able to connect ideas, it is a good indicator that you understood and remembered what you read
- go over your notes
- go over highlighted or underlined sections
- skim over chapter
- go back over questions you may have jotted down
- create summary of the entire chapter
- try to read in 35-40 min. increments, and then take a short break (5-10min)
- read during a time of day when you have optimal concentration
- create motivation by discussing the reading or questions with a partner
- pay attention to pictures and graphs
- use a dictionary!
- test yourself!
